Professional Development and Applied Learning Journey

Helping students explore academic, research, and professional interests is central to our LSBE mission, and we provide hands-on professional development training and support. LSBE focuses on applied learning opportunities which are rooted in practical, real-world knowledge to supplement the theory and applications taught in the classroom. 

First Year -->

Focus: orienting to university life, exploring career paths, honing “soft” skills, understanding recruiting timelines

Summer: internship, research, or coursework

Prep programming:

  • Time Management Workshop

  • Networking 101 Workshop

  • How to Build a Resume Workshop

  • Study Skills Workshop

Industry Introduction

  • Careers in biotech and pharma

  • Intro to Integrative Biology + Consulting

  • Finding research (on campus and off)

Academic Support

  • Intro to Biotech class (spring)

  • Group and 1:1 academic advising

Sophomore Year -->

Focus: LSBE admissions process + deeper dive into industry exploration

Summer: research position 

Prep programming:

  • Same as first year plus:

  • LSBE App Info Sessions

  • Lab tours

Industry Introduction:

  • Same as first year plus:

  • Recruiting Kickoff Events with the LSBE team (Fall focus is banking/consulting/business, Spring focus is biotech and research)

  • LSBE Leadership Fireside Chats

  • Form a resume book for each cohort and update every semester

Academic Support:

  • Group and 1:1 academic advising

  • LSBE Orientation for admitted students (welcome to program, review resources, etc.)

Junior + Senior Year

Focus: Will vary from student to student. Students will work with the LSBE team to map out their professional development path.

Summer: business internship

Programming:

  • Recruiting Kickoff Events with the LSBE team (Fall focus is banking/consulting/business, Spring focus is biotech and research)

  • LSBE Leadership Fireside Chats

  • Company treks

  • On campus recruiting events

  • Mentor Connections (through LSBE, BBH, SkyDeck, etc.)

  • Office Hour Lunches with LSBE Faculty

Capstone Project

Our Industry Readiness Series aims to help students navigate the transition to the University, explore different industries and career opportunities by engaging industry experts, and secure internship and research opportunities. We also bring employers to campus for info sessions and recruitment events. LSBE students intern at some of the best companies in the world, and conduct research with innovative labs at Berkeley and beyond with world-renowned professors and researchers. LSBE students’ research is supported by the Rastetter and Yeary Scholars Funds. More information about our Rastetter and Yeary Scholars will be available soon.
